Birding has become one of my greatest passions, especially since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. At the time, I was in Botswana leading a photography group, wrapping up an unforgettable safari experience. I’d extended my stay with a few days in South Africa’s renowned Sabi Sands, when the news broke—I needed to return home to Australia. That abrupt shift marked the beginning of a new chapter in my photographic journey.
With international travel on hold, I turned my lens closer to home. Living near the Royal National Park in Sydney’s south, I was fortunate to have access to one of Australia’s richest birding environments. As I explored its trails and habitats, I became captivated by the diversity and beauty of the local birdlife. What began as a way to stay creatively engaged soon evolved into a dedicated pursuit—refining my techniques, expanding my knowledge, and deepening my appreciation for avian photography.
To date, I’ve photographed over 1,300 bird species across the globe, from vibrant endemics in Australia to elusive migrants in Africa and Asia. Wherever I travel, birds remain a constant source of inspiration and challenge.
